August Sanders, 1876 – 1964. Portrait and documentary photographer. He is famous for his project, People of the 20th Century (1911-1946) of which he published a book entitled, Face of Our Time, (1929). Most of Sanders work having survived the Nazis and World War Two bombings was lost to an accidental fire in Cologne in 1946. Sanders lost his son in 1944 (dying in prison as a convicted Communist). After the war Sanders produced very little work, practically retiring from photography.
