You have recommended that I research Ralph Eugene Meatyard and Gillian Wearing as to what their original intentions and their final results.

You also suggested that I try asking people to take part in my project from a distance perhaps using Zoom or email, text or social media. That they could use their phones to conjure up chosen images for personalities and holding the phone in front of their faces. You felt that my idea was very topical and that the face masks could represent the barrier to human contact and communication.

Covid, and our personal and societal responses to its restrictions could be central to this work. It will be viewed during Covid times, and tropes (Zoom meetings, masks etc) will be culturally familiar.

You suggested that I could ask my fellow students to help and if I am unable to successfully put out my request of assistance that you and perhaps your fellow tutors may be able to assist in putting out a call for volunteers.

Everything’s doable. This could become a collaborative art project.

Image quality as a result of taking images from a screen, say from a Zoom, would not be a problem and would probably add to the character of the theme and of the current times.

Your results will be seen through a framework of Covid.

To spend more time experimenting to try to see what problems / challenges or questions my volunteers may have when making masked selfies for my project. Also consider and make clear if a type of background is important and instructions as to how to hold the mask and phone/tablet in front of their face.

Everything will be useful in this process, you’re looking for workable methods. You’re looking to test out your ideas and you’re looking for the best possible results given the conditions.

Test backgrounds, lighting, how you instruct participants etc.

I also discussed Layla Sailor’s work with you, particularly on Instagram she is posted lots of layered works – which we obviously view via screens.

Sophie Calle’s Prenez soin de vous (Take Care of Yourself) – shown at the Whitechapel in 2009, look at all the different methods of interpreting the ‘same’ thing, this has resonance for how your potential collaborators could work with you.
